Maj Anya DeBear (My Ahn-yuh Duh-Bear) is a textile designer and illustrator. A native of New York City, she graduated from Bennington College with a BA in Visual Arts in 2007.  After some years working as a mixed media artist, Maja created a silk scarf label, Ursidae. The designs were based on tessellation drawings developed by her father in 1975, and were in effect a cross-generational collaboration. Ursidae, while initially a personal project, became the catalyst for her transition from studio art to textile and surface design.

Nostalgia, escapism and play are central to Maja’s practice as a designer serving a range of clients and markets, primarily Women’s Ready To Wear and Swim. Her personal work is particularly influenced by pulp fantasy art and genre aesthetics, which she references to highlight the speculative and romantic nature of historical and familial storytelling. and the exotic allure of past, future, and imagined timelines.

She currently works as an in house designer for Revolve in Los Angeles.
